EDUC638 - Technology Implementation Plan

Technology Implementation Plan – Edmodo

Implementation Level: Classroom, 5th grade

Executive Summary:

Edmodo is a secure Social Learning website that closely resembles Facebook.  It was created to connect the way that students learn with the way that they live (Edmodo, 2011).  Social Networking has become one of the main tools for communication (Zaidieh, 2012).  Edmodo is to be used a learning tool for students to promote 21st century skills and classroom engagement at the same time.    There will be a clear separation between the two by requiring students to use written communication skills and to only discuss the assigned topics (Johnson, 2010).  Students cannot send private messages to each other and all posts are archived even if deleted.  It will be expected that students adhere to specific guidelines in order to promote the educational environment.

Current Equipment to be used:

·         3 COWs (Computer on Wheels) containing 16 laptops each

·         10 iPads (with Edmodo App)

·         Computer lab with 25 desktop computers

·         3-6 desktop computers in each classroom.

Additional Resources/Purchases

·         None needed, Edmodo is free and on the Web.

Goals:

·         Students will create and maintain an Edmodo account though the school year.

·         Students will practice internet safety by not sharing private or personal information while on Edmodo.

·         Students will better develop written/typed communication skills through the use of proper grammar and mechanics in discussion posts while also gaining 21st Century skills.

·         Students will collaborate via Edmodo for research.

·         Students will hold weekly book discussions with their small groups via Edmodo.

·         Students will demonstrate understanding of concepts via Edmodo.

How Goals will be Met:

·         Students will view the getting started video, read over the student guide and then create their Edmodo account.

·         Students will be given an Edmodo Student Code of Conduct that they will be expected to adhere to whenever using Edmodo.  This code includes guidelines on the sharing of personal information, proper netiquette, and the use of proper grammar and mechanics as Edmodo is an educational learning tool.  If they do not their privileges will be revoked.

·         Small groups will be created for students to discuss topics, research and novels being read in class.

·         A COW will be checked out for use on Tuesday and Thursday each week, iPads on Wednesday morning and students will be in the computer lab on Wednesday afternoon to complete Exit tickets, small group discussions, review questions, and assignments via Edmodo.

·         The teacher will monitor Edmodo daily and respond to students and give feedback on a regular basis.
